I have a question for all of you experienced Card readers. I have never read anything other than the Speaker and Shadow series. I figure to have some gift cards after christmas to pick up some new books and wanted to read some of Card's work outside of the enderverse. I was just looking for sugestions on where to start. I do like the Speaker series better than the Shadow series, if that helps at all. But I really haven't done much reading in a long while, so I figured I start with an author that I knew. All suggestions are much appreciated.

Well, skipping the "Just about anything by OSC is a great read" routine (because I enjoy his 'style' of writing), I'd say you might enjoy:
Seventh Son (series)
of course there's a long list of great alternates. But genrally I'd wait before trying:
Hart's Hope
Saints
Memory of Earth Series (unless you're LDS, of course... although I did enjoy the series quite a bit, and I am not Mormon.)

I've only read two books that are not Ender related:
The Worthing Saga
Enchantment
They both are awesome. Read them both.

I would try a standalone or two. I think a few of my favorites off the top of my head are Songmaster, Pastwatch and Worthing Saga.
I really liked the first three of the Homecoming series (and I read it before I knew it had any connection to Mormonism) but the last two weren't great. The Alvin Maker (Seventh Son) series is very good but it isn't finished yet, still awaiting the seventh and last book.

I really loved the Alvin series. My favorite standalone is probably Pastwatch, though Enchantment is a close second.

Enchantment and Treason are both quite good.

Worthing Saga! I also thought pretty much everything in Maps in a Mirror was good. Songmaster was good, and Treason was good if... different somehow, in my opinion. I'm going to stop now before I just list everything I've read by him.

I was thinking of starting with a couple of standalones just for the fact that I don't think I will have that much in gift cards. The fact of the matter is, if I get involved in reading a series, I will want to read the rest of the series and probably end up spending money that I can't really afford to spend.
Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I haven't made a decision yet, but will keep you informed on what I get and how I like it. Probably won't be until after christmas, unless I get an early gift.

Library? Oh yeah, I remember those: research. Yuck.
(jk! I use libraries all the time. Even for DVD movies - they're FREE!)

Seeing how I have no time to go to the library (or the bookstore for that matter), I don't think that is going to happen. The only free time I have is very late night, perfect for reading. But actually getting the books is the problem. A problem easily solved by online shopping.

If you worshiped them, you'd spell it Libraries.

That's not rebellious, it's just sad. Not to mention deeply annoying, and being a demonstration of one's ignorance to the world.

Well I was bored at work today and decided to put my polyanna present(Barnes and Noble gift card) to work. I ordered three.
I picked up:
Pastwatch
Enchantment
Worthing Saga
Now I just have to decide which order to read them in once they come.

I am a little over 100 pages into Pastwatch right now and I absolutely love it. If the rest of this book and the other two are this good, I will be extremely happy with my purchase.
